Fortunately, Covid cases in San Diego continue to fall, but please continue to be conscientious when attending events (particularly indoor events) to protect yourself and the people you may encounter. Note that numerous venues still have specific requirements regarding vaccination and masking.
Special Announcement: The wonderful folks at the Media Art Center's Digital Gym informed us they will be participating in the National Cinema Day on Saturday. All movie tickets will be only $3. Not only that, they will be handing out free popcorn! They will be screening the French film Fire of Love, along with the American films Claydream and Crimes of the Future. NBC San Diego has compiled a map of other San Diego theatres participating in National Cinema Day.
Tonight (Friday) the Barona 50th Anniversary Powwow will take place. If you have never been to a powwow, now is your chance! You can get some fun hands-on experience with Japanese Origami at the Meet Me at Mingei: Fold Me In event. A bit later, at the Japanese Friendship Garden, you can get your geek on at the Otaku Smash Night!
Next Saturday, there will be a Ukrainian Festival Fundraiser at Feast and Fareway in Coronado. Proceeds will benefit Ukrainian children affected by the war. AfroCon 2022 will take place at the Jackie Robinson YMCA. The Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band will perform at the Balboa Park Club. At the Jewish Community Center, there will be a Hindustani Concert featuring Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt on slide guitar, accompanied by Subhen Chatterjee on tabla. Colombian singer and songwriter Sebastián Yatra will perform at the Viejas Arena. Mexican rock band Caifanes will perform at SDSU's Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. The Little Italy summer film series at Amici Park will conclude its season with a screening of Noi e la Giulia (The Legendary Giulia and Other Miracles).
Sunday, the House of Ukraine will hold their annual Lawn Program.
Tuesday, the Capoeira Luanda Batizado & Festival 2022 will take place in North Park. At the Coronado Library, you can take part in a reading of Macbeth. The Digital Gym will be screening Andrzej Żuławski’s stunningly filmed 1981 film Possession.
Wednesday, the Coronado Library will screen the classic 1959 Japanese film Floating Weeds. Afro-Argentinian Reggae musician and songwriter Fidel Nadal will perform at the House of Blues.
Next Thursday, the 22nd LGBTQ Film Festival will kick-off at the Natural History Museum, and they will screen films until next Sunday. Several of the films are international.
Next Friday at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego, the exhibit A Penny, for What It’s Worth, featuring works by artist Yaw Owusu, opens. The exhibit will continue until the end of November. The Digital Gym as part of the German Currents Kino (film theater) series will screen Coup with additional screenings on the following Sunday and Wednesday. The classic film Casablanca will be shown at Cinema Under the Stars throughout the weekend.
Next Saturday, the annual Cardiff by the Sea Greek Festival will take place at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. The House of Korea will hold its annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages, The 1st Annual USS Midway Birthday & Multi-Cultural Celebration will take place aboard the aircraft carrier and will feature numerous international dance and music groups. The Spanish tragicomedy The Good Boss (El Buen Patrón) will be screened at the Digital Gym with repeat screenings on the following Monday and Thursday. Mexican group Los Ángeles Azules, who specialize in cumbia sonidera music, will perform at the Viejas Arena. Iranian singer Moein will perform at the Balboa Theatre.
Next Sunday, on the lawn next to the new ComicCon Museum in Balboa Park, there will be a Dandiya Celebration sponsored by the House of India.
Cross-cultural/international-themed theatrical offerings in San Diego include A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Old Globe (at the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, ends Sunday), Cabaret at the Cygnet Theatre in Old Town, and Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical which opened yesterday at the Old Globe's Shiley Stage.
